Massive police raids on suspected protestors in Minneapolis

[updated below (with video) - Update II - Update III - Update IV]

Protesters here in Minneapolis have been targeted by a series of highly intimidating, sweeping police raids across the city, involving teams of 25-30 officers in riot gear, with semi-automatic weapons drawn, entering homes of those suspected of planning protests, handcuffing and forcing them to lay on the floor, while law enforcement officers searched the homes, seizing computers, journals, and political pamphlets. Last night, members of the St. Paul police department and the Ramsey County sheriff’s department handcuffed, photographed and detained dozens of people meeting at a public venue to plan a demonstration, charging them with no crime other than “fire code violations,” and early this morning, the Sheriff’s department sent teams of officers into at least four Minneapolis area homes where suspected protesters were staying.

Jane Hamsher and I were at two of those homes this morning — one which had just been raided and one which was in the process of being raided. Each of the raided houses is known by neighbors as a “hippie house,” where 5-10 college-aged individuals live in a communal setting, and everyone we spoke with said that there had never been any problems of any kind in those houses, that they were filled with “peaceful kids” who are politically active but entirely unthreatening and friendly. Posted below is the video of the scene, including various interviews, which convey a very clear sense of what is actually going on here.

In the house that had just been raided, those inside described how a team of roughly 25 officers had barged into their homes with masks and black swat gear, holding large semi-automatic rifles, and ordered them to lie on the floor, where they were handcuffed and ordered not to move. The officers refused to state why they were there and, until the very end, refused to show whether they had a search warrant. They were forced to remain on the floor for 45 minutes while the officers took away the laptops, computers, individual journals, and political materials kept in the house. One of the individuals renting the house, an 18-year-old woman, was extremely shaken as she and others described how the officers were deliberately making intimidating statements such as “Do you have Terminator ready?” as they lay on the floor in handcuffs. The 10 or so individuals in the house all said that though they found the experience very jarring, they still intended to protest against the GOP Convention, and several said that being subjected to raids of that sort made them more emboldened than ever to do so.

Several of those who were arrested are being represented by Bruce Nestor, the President of the Minnesota chapter of the National Lawyers’Guild. Nestor said that last night’s raid involved a meeting of a group calling itself the “RNC Welcoming Committee”, and that this morning’s raids appeared to target members of “Food Not Bombs,” which he described as an anti-war, anti-authoritarian protest group. There was not a single act of violence or illegality that has taken place, Nestor said. Instead, the raids were purely anticipatory in nature, and clearly designed to frighten people contemplating taking part in any unauthorized protests.

Nestor indicated that only 2 or 3 of the 50 individuals who were handcuffed this morning at the 2 houses were actually arrested and charged with a crime, and the crime they were charged with is “conspiracy to commit riot.” Nestor, who has practiced law in Minnesota for many years, said that he had never before heard of that statute being used for anything, and that its parameters are so self-evidently vague, designed to allow pre-emeptive arrests of those who are peacefully protesting, that it is almost certainly unconstitutional, though because it had never been invoked (until now), its constitutionality had not been tested.

There is clearly an intent on the part of law enforcement authorities here to engage in extreme and highly intimidating raids against those who are planning to protest the Convention. The DNC in Denver was the site of several quite ugly incidents where law enforcement acted on behalf of Democratic Party officials and the corporate elite that funded the Convention to keep the media and protesters from doing anything remotely off-script. But the massive and plainly excessive preemptive police raids in Minnesota are of a different order altogether. Targeting people with automatic-weapons-carrying SWAT teams and mass raids in their homes, who are suspected of nothing more than planning dissident political protests at a political convention and who have engaged in no illegal activity whatsoever, is about as redolent of the worst tactics of a police state as can be imagined.

This is my 2 cents about the Republican VP selection…

We will all get what we ask for though…Its a Brave New World

Palindromes – somewhat cohesive thoughts on the election, VP nominations, and kayfabe

August 30, 2008 — 1 Comment

No, it is opposition – that people speak of with McCain’s selection of Sarah Palin, hot hockey mom and Governor of Alaska.  Apparantly, people in on the Republican side loves the selection, while the Democrats were just happy to make sure they didn’t pick someone to kill Obama’s shine.

Now, they both have heavy positives and negatives.  For one, Biden runs off at the mouth – something he can’t just ‘do.’  Palin is basically the least experienced VP candidate in recent memory – to say that she is a fresh face, is a vast magnanomous understatement.  Biden obviously is going to be more equipped to handle a sudden ascension to Presidency, but Palin will prove to be feisty and very competitive.  You have to wonder if being a mother is really going to be enough, because that seems to be her main positive at this point.

Top step – Sara(h)’s pet spot – My brother and some other Republicans are basically rejoicing at Palin’s selection, but I’m not so sure if it’s wishful thinking.  There is literally nothing that jumps out and says she can actually do the job.  Does she scare Democrats?  I suppose so, but obviously there really hasn’t been anything saying they are – but you HAVE to worry.  I mean it’s like two rivals teams in race for the pennant, and Team A gets a solid 30 homer guy….and then Team B gets young guy to add some speed to the team.  It’s hard to say who’s coming out on top.

Sad? I’m Midas! – I think Obama is going to have this philosophy.  This is where the Republicans disappoint me.  Do you really think Obama’s camp didn’t think a wild card just might be out there somewhere in continental North America?  People seem to believe that the Red Tide will roll this into a nice RNC, and push along side, or ahead of the Obama/Biden ticket.  And this may, in fact, be the case.

At the end of the day – they’re will be some debating, there will be some posturing, there will be some calling out of names – usual stuff.  It’s the debating that I’m interesting in watch, as far as a television show goes.  It will be good stuff.

Are we not, Rae, near to new era?

Are we?  A woman as a VP…..potentially a black man as a president.

To be quite honest – everyone knows I’m (Kahron) apolitical.  I view this as a spectacle of mass proportions, maiming the population’s senses, common or otherwise, to death.  As a liberal personality, my sensibilites would lead me to believe Obama as the natural pick.  But I actually trust neither candidate, because quite honestly, I don’t trust the system in which we elect these people.  I don’t NOT care – I just don’t look at one guy or the other and see someone who actually cares.

Now, I do like a good mystery.  I like that the producers of the show are also acting in the program.  I like to look and ask everyone I see about how they feel about the show….and who they think is going to win.

I must assert here that I’m not a conspiracy theorist.  I truly believe that the Democrats and Republicans sing the same song, from opposite sides of the field.  They are one team, that plays each other in front of the world.

That isn’t a conspiracy – that is merely opinion.  I just happen to think Barack and John probably text each other, give each tips on things.  I think they play poker online with each other every other Saturday……seriously.  I really don’t think there is the division you see on television.

In pro wrestling, there is something called kayfabe – it’s basically the somewhat, not well hidden, fake “real” world in which wrestlers play out their televised lives.  For you, they are fighting for their lives and getting beat up backstage with folding stairs.  They are throwing each other from the top rope and through tables.  But in the real reality, they are pushing the writers’stories along.  They are positioning their punishing careers into large six-figure salaries bybecoming world champions, faces of their industry..action figures….cereal boxes…etc.

And their audience plays on their every word and action.  They know it’s not real, but they spend money to buy per per views….memorabilia….and they are rabid.  You have to pay attention to them live.  It’s an interesting conundrum:  It’s fake, but you make it real in your mind.

Watching they end of the Democratic National Convention gave me the feeling of Obama being crowned Intercontinental Champion – and the fans screamed…and yelled…..and cried, all with a familiar sense of euphoria that I’ve see before.

…I was 10…….it was Wrestlemania VI…..the Hulkster versus the Ultimate Warrior….the Warrior gorilla presses Hogan for the win…1…2….3.  The Skydome goes wild….

After Obama gave that speech – which is one, if not the very best speech at a convention – I just watched the crowd.  I looked for the Biden, then the wives come out.  They really believed it.  They, and Democrats at home, believed it, just like Republicans will later on.  They stopped being analysts and party boosters and lobbyists.  They became the inevitable – they became fans.

What an entertaining show!  Oh, the drama…the climax…the dénouement.

As a hopeful director, I feel a sense of satisfaction at the end of it all and I hope to experience it once again.

…..they fucking cried.  Brilliant.

I’ve got all the news channels, and they are lined up back to back.  Who needs Godard or Scorcese or Spielberg movies?

Where’s Soledad O’Brien?  I need the latest on Barack’s bowel movements.  I bet he eats a lot of fiber.

Bengals wide receiver changes last name to Ocho Cinco

August 29, 2008

Sports doesn’t (and won’t) be played too much on this station.  But those who know me know I’m a HUGE sports fan, and this was WAY too funny.

CINCINNATI — Maybe receiver Chad Johnson can go by the name that his head coach hates.

Chad JohnsonJohnson

The Cincinnati Bengals receiver has legally changed his name to Chad Javon Ocho Cinco in Broward County, Fla., a switch that became official this week. Johnson, who lives in Miami, didn’t return a message left on his cell phone Friday night.

“It’s something I don’t think anyone has ever done before,” he told the team’s Web site. “Have I ever had a reason for why I do what I do? I’m having fun.”

Two years ago, Johnson gave himself the moniker — a reference in Spanish to his No. 85 — and put it on the back of his uniform before a game. Quarterback Carson Palmer ripped it off before the kickoff. After the season, coach Marvin Lewis — who dislikes Johnson’s attention-getting stunts — referred to the receiver as “Ocho Psycho.”

Bengals spokesman Jack Brennan said the Bengals had no comment on the matter.

Johnson has been a concern for the Bengals this season. He unsuccessfully lobbied for a trade in the offseason, threatening to sit out if he didn’t get his way. When the Bengals refused, he relented and showed up for minicamp, but complained that his right ankle was bothering him.

He had bone spurs removed from the ankle and was limited at the start of training camp. In the second preseason game, he landed awkwardly and temporarily dislocated his left shoulder. Johnson is wearing a harness and expects to play in the season opener against Baltimore.

Tunes for tots: Late of the Pier, The Verve, Lindstrøm, Danny

August 26, 2008

I’ve been working a lot again.  However – I’ve got a few music picks for your listening pleasure.  As Ghost would say, let us “go in.”

Late of the Pier – Fantasy Black Channel (LP), and Echoclistel Lambietroy (EP)

First the LP – Good god almighty.  The best album of the year – just ahead of One Day As A Lion and Los Angeles (speaking very subjectively of course).  I really don’t have the adjectives to tell you how I feel about this album.  It’s just great.  I suppose it’s kind of a rhythmic Klaxons, driven a little more by the synthisized basslines, than two/three part harmonies.

There has been a glutton of (truthfully) fad dance/electro pop/rock acts coming out, i.e. MGMT, Crystal Castles, Cut Copy (which is pretty good)…etc, etc.  But this is definitely the best of them all (and the one with lasting potential).  I also put in the EP because of the dope remixes on some of the songs.

4.8 out of 5 – ILL.  I’m sure this will be in my (a lot of peoples) end of year list.  Probable contender for England’s Mercury Prize

Lindstrøm – Where You Go, I Go Too

Gotta love the creepy, even slightly douchebag cover and album title.  I can’t “recommend” this electronic album, mainly because it’s not really an album you could pick and choose, or even skip around on.  For example…the songs range from around 7 minutes to the title’s time of just under 30 minutes.  I read one review a few minutes ago, that said it would be perfect for a slow and easy Saturday evening….and that’s about right.   It’s not completely dancey…..and it’s not totally slowed up…..it’s got a nice balance and wide range of textures.  It literally grows from atmospheric to upbeat, over a period of 10 minutes….then into even more layers.  Like I said – I can’t tell you go pick it up and just play it like a regular CD.  But if you did – you wouldn’t be disappointed.

4 out of 5.

The Verve – Forth

Remember these guys?  The guys that broke up after the last two classic albums (A Northern Soul and Urban Hymns) they came out with?  Well, they’ve decide to come back for another turn on the merry-go-round – and the wait was worthwhile.  For anyone looking for classic Urban Hymns status….you won’t find it…at least not totally.  This seems to be more of a “…let’s work out the kinks…” kind of album.  That being said, it’s a really good album – basically everything you’d expect from the Verve is in here: very flowy…layered….the big mid to late 90′s English arena band sound, just brought forward to 2008.  Hopefully, they will stay for more than another cup of tea.

4.2 out of 5

Danny! – And I Love H.E.R (Original Soundtrack)

This isn’t really a soundtrack…it’s a play on Common’s song, stretched into a concept album about his “relationship” with hip hop, complete with a De La-type storyline….and this curiously wasn’t released on Def Jux, but on his own 1911/Badenov label.  But I’m going to say something crazy – he is one of the best, most productive producers in rap.  He is a talented and improving lyricist, though he’s still a little bit too choppy and content-limited at this point to say his raps match his beats.  How he’s able to make money with all these samples is a wonder, but he uses his samples better most of the sampling producers out there, especially the vocal samples.  (Check out “Not the One”…amazing)  There are some duds….like “Where You Goin’”….but with 17 tracks, there are going to be some guaranteed snoozers.  He’s not quite where he needs to be….and he’s tremendously self-aware pertaining his status in the rap world.  But hopefully with El-P, he’ll find what he’s looking for – and we’ll reap the benefits.

4.2 out of 5 – quality hold-over, as I (we) look forward to the Def Jux debut

Cancer-Stricken 34-Year-Old Chinese Computer Engineer Dies After Being Denied Care in Private US Immigration Prison

August 20, 2008

Earlier this month, a thirty-four-year-old Chinese computer engineer, Hiu Lui Ng, who overstayed his visa, died in a Rhode Island immigration detention center. He had cancer in his liver, lung and bones, and a fractured spine. Despite repeated complaints of severe pain, Mr. Ng was refused independent medical evaluation by immigration officials. Before Mr. Ng died on August 6th, he told his sister that the nurses at the Donald W. Wyatt Detention Center in Rhode Island had told him to “stop faking” his illness.

Alot has been happening on this front in the past few years. We do need people to watch the people who are watching us. Check out the blackcrosse blog. Hopefully the people running this site will keep up the good work. Im sure they will have plenty to write about after the upcoming republican and democratic conventions.

Speaking of the conventions, how about this? Gitmo on the Platte

“This is the Olympics the West Wanted”

August 18, 2008 — 1 Comment

Article here.

I’m not going to regurgitate this article – you can read it.  I just wanted to speak quickly and subjectively about these Olympics.

I’ve had a weird feeling about these Games.  I think of Beijing and for some reason I think about this Rolling Stone article I read about how China is basically becoming technocratic is so many ways, it’ll make your head spin (and scientists will count those spins too.)  Everything is being watched by something or someone – it’s almost if it’s kind of an experiment on control.

On one hand, you have China’s very obvious issues with state-run oppression and suppression of anything deemed too political.  On the other, much larger hand, you have commericialism at its height.  A Communist country selling itself to the world, but not politically.  You have to understand the moment here – you have a merging powerhouse Communist nation with so much capitalistic appeal to the West they HAD to make sure Beijing had basically the best Games possible.  The article reads that China (with help from the West I’m sure) spent $40 billion to put on this show.  Think about that.  40,000,000,000 dollars.  A fast spending, easily entertained people in a politically controlled, technocratic environment?  Something’s giving me the bubble guts….and it’s not the food I had for lunch.

On another front – You have to wonder if something like what Smith and Carlos did 40 years ago could’ve happened in today’s climate – not totally from a fear of the state standpoint as Americans…..but because of the general apathy towards human rights by most.  (I say this with the vicious bite of irony and mindful hypocrasy, given my current job – but really only I have to deal with that in my heart/mind…one way or another.  And I actually think this experience with equip me with a lot more than most – more on this in another blog posting.)

With our news cycle spinning and spinning around ideas in our heads….who knows how a recreation of that moment would work in our age.  A part of me wishes it DID happen at these Games, in some form or fashion.  With a hypocritcally raised, and therefore muted fist in the air, I salute Smith and Carlos and those who continue to work for true equality everywhere in the world, then and now.

I have to say….as I look at the photo up top, I look at it with an unequivocal sense of pride, courage, and strength.

I also look at it with a sense of anger (for a variety of reasons)…..confusion……and even a sense of shame – both objective and personal.
