Solar City…

April 23, 2009

This is what Im talking about…

Florida to Build First Solar Powered City in U.S.

solarpanel

The first 100% solar powered city in the U.S. is in the works, and will be powered by the world’s largest photovoltaic plant.

The eco-city, called Babcock Ranch, is a joint venture between a real estate developer, Kitson & Partners, and Florida Power & Light, and will be located near Fort Myers, Florida.

Babcock Ranch will include almost 20,000 houses and 6 million square feet of mixed retail, office, and light industrial space, and have city-wide wireless internet and electric car charging stations throughout.

The city will be fully powered by solar during the day, and produce an excess of electricity that will be exported to the grid. The CEO of Kitson said the project will serve as a model to other communities and be a “living laboratory for companies, workers and families ready to reap the rewards of innovation.”

Florida Power & Light expects to break ground on the $400 million solar PV plant this year, pending regulatory approval. Construction of Babcock Ranch is slated for the summer of 2010.

The project’s cost is estimated at $2 billion, and is expected to create 20,000 jobs.

April 22, 2009

Spokane, Washington, less than three miles from the headquarters of a secretive CIA contractor that played a key role in developing the Bush administration’s interrogation methods. The firm, Mitchell Jessen & Associates, is named after the two military psychologists who founded the company, James Mitchell and Bruce Jessen. Beginning in 2002, the CIA hired the psychologists to train interrogators in brutal techniques, including waterboarding, sleep deprivation and pain

A Short Citizen’s Guide to Kooks, Demagogues, and Right-Wingers On Tax Day

No one likes to pay taxes, so tax day typically attracts a range of right-wing Republicans, kooks, and demagogues, all of whom tell us how awful we have it. Herewith a short citizen’s guide (that is, a citizen’s guide that’s short rather than a guide for short citizens) responding to the predictable charges:

1. “Americans pay too much in taxes.” Wrong: The United States has the lowest taxes of all developed nations.

2. “The rich pay too much! The top ten percent of income earners pay over 72 percent of all income taxes!” Misleading: The main reason the rich pay such a large percent is they’ve become so much richer than the bottom 90 percent in recent years. If you look at what they pay as individuals — the percent of their incomes over and above the highest rate below them — you’ll see a steady decline over the years. When Republican Dwight Eisenhower was president, the marginal rate on the highest earners was 91 percent (after deductions and tax credits, closer to 50 percent); by 1980 it was still up there, at 70 percent (an effective rate of closer to 45 percent); under Bill Clinton, it was 38 percent (an effective rate closer to 28 percent).

Look at the after-tax earnings of families and you’ll see what’s really going on. Between 1980 and 2000, the after-tax earnings of famlies at the top rose more than 150 percent, while the after-tax earnings of families in the middle rose about 10 percent. The Bush tax cuts of 2001 and 2003 raised the after-tax incomes of most Americans by a bit over 1 percent — but raised the after-tax incomes of millionaires by 4.4 percent.

3. “The bottom 60 percent pay only 3.3 percent of the taxes!” Misleading again. Most Americans are paying more in sales taxes than they ever have. Property taxes have also been rising at a steady clip. And Social Security taxes have also risen (thanks to the Greenspan Commission), while earnings over about $100,000 aren’t subject to Social Security taxes. So-called “sin” taxes (mostly beer and cigarettes) have also skyrocketed. All of these taxes take a bigger bite out of the paychecks of people with lower incomes than they do people with higher incomes.

4. “Obama is raising your taxes!” Wrong. Obama is cutting taxes for 95 percent of Americans, by about $400 per person a year — not a whopping tax cut, to be sure, but not a tax increase by any stretch. Only the top 2 percent will have a tax increase, but even this tax increase is modest. Basically, they go back to the rates they were paying under Bill Clinton (their deductions will be limited to 28 percent, which is only fair). And they won’t start paying this until 2011 anyway.

5. “The huge debts we’re wracking up will cause your taxes to rise!” Wrong again. When it comes to the national debt, as I’ve said before, the relevant statistic is the ratio of debt to the gross domestic product. The only sure way to bring that debt down and make it manageable in future years is to get the economy growing again — which requires that, in the short term, the government spend a lot of money (because consumers and businesses won’t). In the long term, the biggest source of concern is rising health-care costs. And that’s something Obama and Congress are aiming to tackle.

6. “We have a patriotic duty to stand up against Washington taxes!” Just the opposite. We have a patriotic duty to pay taxes. As multi-billionaire Warrent Buffett put it, “If you stick me down in the middle of Bangladesh or Peru or someplace, you’ll find out how much this talent is going to product in the wrong kind of soil. I will be struggling thirty years later.” President Teddy Roosevelt made the case in 1906 when he argued in favor of continuing the inheritance tax. “The man of great wealth owes a particular obligation to the state because he derives special advantages from the mere existence of government.”

An acquaintance from law school, now a partner in one of Washington’s biggest and wealthiest law firms, explained to me one day over lunch how he and his partners use tax rules to create offsetting taxable gains and losses, and then allocate the gains to the firm’s foreign partners who don’t pay taxes in the United States. That way, they keep the losses here and shelter their income abroad. I noticed he had an American flag lapel pin. “You’re supporting our troops,” I said, referring to his pin. “Yup,” he replied, entirely missing my point.

big music drop…new and old: Devlin, K-OS, Jadakiss, Doves, The Juan McLean, etc.

April 12, 2009

with the little time I have until my upcoming vacation – here’s some stuff I’ve been on:

K-OS - Yes!

K-OS - Yes!

another album from one of Canada’s rap ambassadors – sort of the one man Outkast of the North – i would actually like to see them work on something together (i’m selfish..lol).  that is a little bit of a lazy assessment, but I say it in high praise.  been a fan since Superstar….this is pretty dope.  find the deluxe edition if you can.  TO in the house – dope city btw.  definitely one of my favorites of 2009.

EDIT – the more and more I listen to this album – the more I love it….basically one of the better hip hop albums I’ve heard in a good while…

Jadakiss - The Last Kiss

Jadakiss - The Last Kiss

the last of KISS trilogy.  i’m disappointed in the album, as a whole….but it has some choice tracks.  the main one is Death Wish with Lil Wayne – no shit….Wayne basically KILLS it.  i’m not a super Wayne fan or anything – but he destroys this track.  if not anything, just pay a dollar for this track alone.

Ras G - Brotha From Anotha Planet

Ras G - Brotha From Anotha Planet

i copped this on the count of a Flying Lotus co-sign.  it’s basically in the vein of FlyLo, with a Sun Ra feel.  dude even looks a little like Sun Ra.  some of it is real smooth, like Penny’s Confession….which was too short.  and then you have the other end with Shinelight – which takes a minute to adjust to.  nice pick-up to chill out too.

Doves - Kingdom of Rust (LP)

Doves - Kingdom of Rust (LP)

more or less, what you expect from Doves…except maybe a little more orchestra.  i will always look forward to anything they basically put out – not to a Radiohead, Dears, or Jay-Z level….but close.  a strong album.

The Juan McLean - The Future Will Come

The Juan McLean - The Future Will Come

disco…DFA…google it.  Dope.

Breakage - Callahan (single)

Breakage - Callahan (single)

another dope act in the dubstep world.  speaking of which, I’m looking forward to seeing some dubstep get spun, when I get back to Austin.

other things I’ve been listening to that aren’t really new -

22-20s - (self-titled)

22-20s - (self-titled)

kinda of a more bluesy White Stripes with more instruments.  i’ve actually had this for a while – a few years actually…. but it was put back in my mind by the Guy Ritchie flick RocknRolla.   good album…and flick, btw.

Devlin - Art of Rolling

Devlin - Art of Rolling

people can say whatever they’d like, but a few of these London grime MCs would utterly destroy your favorite rapper – on a track or freestyle.  again – google it…better yet, youtube a freestyle from Ghetts or this cat.  they just need better production – it’s just way too hit or (mostly) miss.   pick this up strictly for lyrics…although there are a few winner beats.

Eddie Bo and the Soulfinders - The Hook and Sling

Eddie Bo and the Soulfinders - The Hook and Sling

legendary funk.  the title track is enough really – sick drumming…..”are you ready?  yeeaaaahhh!”  very, very good album.

The Women Who Rock My World…

April 10, 2009 — 1 Comment

So I was watching Kevin Drew’s short film that doubles as a video for Feist’s song The Water, and I realized there are alot of women in music who kick ass. By kick ass I mean they are artistic, smart, attractive. I decided to dedicate a post to these  women and maybe you could use a little more bad ass estrogen in your day.

We will start with

1. Feist

fesit

She is probably the most famous out of all the women I am going to list. Some may feel a certian way about her for her success, I dont. Despite her corny ass Ipod commercial I am giving her a pass. The woman has one of the most soothing voices I have ever heard. If I believed in angels and they could sing they would probably sound like Feist.

Watch her video/short film for The Water here at Pitchfork.

2. Annie Clark a.k.a. St. Vincent

st-vincent

This is another young lady with an Angelic voice. The thing that makes her different is her ability to be mysterious, strange, and haunting yet remain so inculpable. Oh yeah, another bad ass thing about her is she played in The Polyphinic Spree and Sufjan Stevens back up band. She plays several instruments and writes her own tunes. Her new album Actor will be released May 5th. Enjoy.

Watch her Offical video premiere for Actor Out Of Work.

Paris Is Burning (Live in DUMBO)

3. Elizabeth Powell (Land Of Talk)

liz

Liz Powell is the lead singer and guitarist for the kick ass Canadian indie band Land Of Talk. I was lucky enough to see them live in Richmond when they opened up for Broken Social Scene. She not only tore the house down with LOT she sung all the female vocal parts for BSS. I think Land Of Talk’s first EP should be standard listening for the die hard indie rock fan.

Speak To Me Bones

4. Karen O (Yeah Yeah Yeahs)

karen-o

Karen O is the Williamsburg punk rock princess. They have released their new album Its Blitz on Itunes and it will be released nationwide very soon. A strong history of tearing up the stage, Karen O will kick your ass…

5. Kazu Makino (Blonde Redhead)

kazu

Kazu is the lead singer of the amazing band Blonde Redhead. Although I havent heard much from them lately I am assuming they are hiding out in the studio somewhere.  The most recent song I have heard about them is on the Dark Was The Night Compilation. Blonde Redhead are an awesome band musically but it also helps that Kazu has such a sexy voice.

6. Santi White a.k.a. Santogold a.k.a. SantiGold

santo

Santigold is a survivor of a half century worth of living along musical evolution’s most cutting edges. The only live act that can boast of having out-aged Barbara Bush, having outlived Mr. Miyagi and out styled Liberace, Santigold is here with future flavor. What most people dont know is she produced RES’s amazing first and only album. She also was the lead singer of a punk band called Stiffed produced by some of the dudes from Bad Brains…Badass

7. Natasha Khan (Bat For Lashes)

natash

What more can I say about Natasha Khan that I havent already said. Love me some Natasha Khan

8. Shara Worden (My Brightest Diamond)

shara

I discovered My Brightest Diamond by accident, one of the best accidents I ever made. Shara Worden is classically trained in Opera. She infuses that into indie rock and it makes the most interesting and beautiful combo. She is featured on The Decemberists new album. She has a new remix album dropping soon. Oh yeah she also used to be back up for Sufjan Stevens. I’m not a huge fan of him but he sure has a ear for talent.

Ok well I feel like I could keep going but I will stop. I enjoy all types of music but sometimes I just want my world rocked by some of these ladies…YEAH!

ALBUM COMING SOON

TOM MORELLO AND BOOTS RILEY JOIN FORCES
TO FORM STREET SWEEPER

DEBUT TOUR CONFIRMED WITH NINE INCH NAILS
AND JANE’S ADDICTION

March 6, 2009 — New York, New York — Tom Morello and Boots Riley have joined forces to form the new musical group, Street Sweeper. The group recently wrapped recording sessions for their forthcoming debut album and their first ever tour will be opening all dates in North America on the Nine Inch Nails and Jane’s Addiction May-June Tour (confirmed dates below). The tour will find Nine Inch Nails and Jane’s Addiction sharing a stage for the first time since the debut of the Lollapalooza festival in 1991 (as well as the first tour by the original lineup of Jane’s Addiction in seventeen years).

“It’s revolutionary party jams,” said Morello of Street Sweeper. “It’s got huge steamroller riffs combined with depth, charge, funk, while Boots unloads clip after clip of incendiary rhymes rich with satire and venom.” Riley added, “This is a time when the working class is being fleeced left and right. More families will be homeless and more people will be jobless. They’ll need something to listen to on their ipods while storming Wall Street.”

Tom Morello is a founding member and guitarist of the rock bands Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave. The two bands are responsible for multiple Grammy Awards and a combined 30 million albums sold worldwide. Morello has also received critical acclaim as a solo artist known as The Nightwatchman. Widely celebrated for his unique voice as a master electric guitarist, he is recognized by Rolling Stone Magazine as one of the “100 Greatest Guitar Players of All-Time (26).” He is also one of only two guitarists featured as a playable animated character in the overwhelmingly popular Activision video game Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock. Tom Morello graduated from Harvard University with honors as a Political Science major and has been a widely recognized political activist throughout his career. With System of a Down’s Serj Tankian, Morello formed Axis of Justice, an organization whose purpose is to bring together musicians, music fans, and grassroots political organizations to fight for social justice.

Boots Riley is best known as the leader of The Coup, the seminal Hip-Hop group from Oakland, CA. As a producer and lyricist, Riley has crafted critically acclaimed albums for The Coup that have graced the year-end Top 10 lists of Rolling Stone, The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, and more. They have also received “Album of the Year” honors from The Washington Post, Time Out New York, while Billboard Magazine declared the group “the best hip-hop act of the past decade.” Born in Chicago and raised in East Oakland’s Funktown neighborhood, Boots became a teenage community organizer. From his history of student organizing in Oakland’s public schools, serving on the committee for the Progressive Labor Party, being the President of Youth InCar (Youth International Committee Against Racism), organizing to build California’s Anti-Racist Farm Workers’ Union, to developing “guerrilla hip hop concerts” (mobile concerts on flatbed trucks), Boots Riley has been an integral part of the progressive struggle for radical change through culture.

Music drop: Metric, Blame One, Doves, Benga and Camp Lo

April 4, 2009

yet another music drop.

Metric - Fantasies

Metric - Fantasies

Just came out on iTunes, so you know I had to cop.  Very, very good album.  It’s good to hear something from them again.  If you are a fan of Metric, you will definitely not be disappointed.  I think the physical CD release in April 7th or 14th, depending on where you are in the world, I think.  One of the better albums I’ve heard so far in ’09.

Camp Lo - Stone and Rob Caught On Tape

Camp Lo - Stone and Rob Caught On Tape

One of the most underrated duos, probably ever.  I think the complex similes and metaphors are part of the reason for their underrated-ness.  It’s like…they are too dope lyrically and swag-wise to not come out with an album, but I don’t think people know how to take them.   None the less, this is a pretty decent album – worth your time to investigate.

Doves - Kingdom of Rust EP

Doves - Kingdom of Rust EP

First of all, it’s Doves.  That’s it…..that’s all I really all I need to say.  Cop and enjoy, get prepped for the long play.

Blame One - Days Chasing Days

Blame One - Days Chasing Days

An interesting listen – good production from Black Milk and Exile, and some others – Blu’s on a track too.  It’s hit or miss, but mostly a hit.  Like you listen to “The Word to Say,” “Official WIth It” or “Wonder Why” and it’s like ‘dope’, then you get let down by “Blame Me” or “More Fiyah” – which actually has a dope beat, but the lyrics just seem “eh” and the vocals aren’t even up high enough on the track.  Even with it’s flaws, it’s worth of being checked into.

Album I Should’ve Had Up Before, But Somehow Forgot to Post:

Benga - Diary of an Afro Warrior

Benga - Diary of an Afro Warrior

For dubstep lovers – already a classic.  “26 Basslines” is really all you need to get you right.
