big music drop…new and old: Devlin, K-OS, Jadakiss, Doves, The Juan McLean, etc.
April 12, 2009
with the little time I have until my upcoming vacation – here’s some stuff I’ve been on:

K-OS - Yes!
another album from one of Canada’s rap ambassadors – sort of the one man Outkast of the North – i would actually like to see them work on something together (i’m selfish..lol). that is a little bit of a lazy assessment, but I say it in high praise. been a fan since Superstar….this is pretty dope. find the deluxe edition if you can. TO in the house – dope city btw. definitely one of my favorites of 2009.
EDIT – the more and more I listen to this album – the more I love it….basically one of the better hip hop albums I’ve heard in a good while…

Jadakiss - The Last Kiss
the last of KISS trilogy. i’m disappointed in the album, as a whole….but it has some choice tracks. the main one is Death Wish with Lil Wayne – no shit….Wayne basically KILLS it. i’m not a super Wayne fan or anything – but he destroys this track. if not anything, just pay a dollar for this track alone.

Ras G - Brotha From Anotha Planet
i copped this on the count of a Flying Lotus co-sign. it’s basically in the vein of FlyLo, with a Sun Ra feel. dude even looks a little like Sun Ra. some of it is real smooth, like Penny’s Confession….which was too short. and then you have the other end with Shinelight – which takes a minute to adjust to. nice pick-up to chill out too.

Doves - Kingdom of Rust (LP)
more or less, what you expect from Doves…except maybe a little more orchestra. i will always look forward to anything they basically put out – not to a Radiohead, Dears, or Jay-Z level….but close. a strong album.

The Juan McLean - The Future Will Come
disco…DFA…google it. Dope.

Breakage - Callahan (single)
another dope act in the dubstep world. speaking of which, I’m looking forward to seeing some dubstep get spun, when I get back to Austin.
other things I’ve been listening to that aren’t really new -

22-20s - (self-titled)
kinda of a more bluesy White Stripes with more instruments. i’ve actually had this for a while – a few years actually…. but it was put back in my mind by the Guy Ritchie flick RocknRolla. good album…and flick, btw.

Devlin - Art of Rolling
people can say whatever they’d like, but a few of these London grime MCs would utterly destroy your favorite rapper – on a track or freestyle. again – google it…better yet, youtube a freestyle from Ghetts or this cat. they just need better production – it’s just way too hit or (mostly) miss. pick this up strictly for lyrics…although there are a few winner beats.

Eddie Bo and the Soulfinders - The Hook and Sling
legendary funk. the title track is enough really – sick drumming…..”are you ready? yeeaaaahhh!” very, very good album.
